BEIJING-China could produce close to one-third of all handsets manufactured in the world this year, according to Shao Chunguang of the China Center for Information Industry Development (CCID), who was quoted in the China Daily.
He predicted that domestic and foreign handset makers would produce 130 million handsets in China this year. The two mobile operators would attract 70 to 80 million new subscribers this year, including 13 million on China Unicom’s CDMA network.
Sixty-five percent of urban mobile-phone users bought their handsets before 1999, creating a huge replacement market. China had 206.6 million mobile subscribers at the end of last year.
