MELBOURNE, Australia-Australia’s largest two mobile-phone operators, Telstra and Optus, proved the Christmas sales winners with heavy handset discounting largely responsible for both carriers’ successes.
Despite Telstra claiming it would not subsidize phone handsets, the option remains popular with consumers. Both Telstra and Optus offered customers free deals in the lead-up to Christmas.
Meanwhile, Optus has announced it expects to meet its 30-percent growth forecasts for the 2002 financial year.
