Motorola targets large China developer community

BEIJING-At its MotoCoder developer conference in Shanghai, Motorola vowed to strongly encourage software development for its mobile phones in China.

Having a large developer community may be crucial for the company to maintain its leading edge in China. Short message service (SMS) is popular in China and coming up with new software applications is important in the fiercely competitive handset market. Applications that may appeal to Chinese consumers are MP3, mobile karaoke and games.

Small developers are increasingly teaming with Motorola to enter the Chinese market, while domestic developers hope Motorola can help them on the international market.

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post reported that game developer Sorrent is marketing Yao Ming Basketball, featuring the Chinese basketball player who is now a member of the U.S. team the Houston Rockets.

Prices would be kept low to discourage piracy.
