CTIA backs away from call for merger guidelines

WASHINGTON-The president of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association last Friday stepped back from comments he made to the press earlier in the week calling for merger guidelines from the Federal Communications Commission.

“The comments I used as reported in the press articles may have been imprecise, and thus misinterpreted as calling for ‘guidelines’ for mergers following the sunset of the spectrum cap. The intent of my comments was to reiterate that the FCC should look to the [Department of Justice] merger guidelines in evaluating any [commercial mobile radio services] transactions that come before it,” said CTIA President Thomas Wheeler in a letter to FCC Chairman Michael Powell.
