KT expects to launch W-CDMA service in June 2003

SEOUL, South Korea-South Korean mobile operator KT ICOM, the wideband-CDMA subsidiary of KTF, said it will launch commercial W-CDMA services next June.

International press reports said KT-ICOM signed a contract with LG Electronics on Tuesday to supply about $109 million worth of equipment for the W-CDMA service. KTF and its rivals SK Telecom and LG Telecom already offer cdma2000 1x services in the country.

In related news, European consultancy Strand Consult this week released a report stating Korea is the most advanced mobile market in the world. The report credits the country’s success to South Korean mobile operators focusing strongly on revenue-sharing models, making it attractive for content and service providers to develop and market quality services. This, in turn, has made it more attractive for users to subscribe to these services and to upgrade their terminals, Strand said.
