Australia’s Orange on course for record profit, 3G launch

MELBOURNE, Australia-Mobile operator Orange announced this week it is on course to record a profit by the fourth quarter of 2002. A subsidiary of Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia), Orange also declared that it is on target with its plans for the rollout of its third-generation (3G) mobile network.

Orange made its profit forecast after reporting an improved interim result-a loss of A$72.7 million (US$39.6 million) for the first half of the year, but 20-percent better than last year’s result for the same half.

Hutchison’s chief executive, Kevin Russell, said the company expects to launch 3G services in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane during the first quarter of 2003.
