TOKYO—NTT DoCoMo Inc. said it will begin licensing patents for its proprietary W-CDMA technology in an attempt to encourage worldwide implementation and reduce procurement and production costs.
DoCoMo’s W-CDMA network, which is not directly compatible with what European operators hope to eventually deploy, is currently the only W-CDMA-based next-generation network in commercial operation.
DoCoMo also announced the launch of a one-to-many video streaming trial service for its FOMA network designed to stream both live and archived video content to FOMA phones and personal digital assistants connected to PHS phones.
Open content via the V-Live network, which employs the MPEG-4 standard, will be accessible beginning May 15, with content including music, sports highlights, news, animation and tourist information.
