South Korean auto parts and mobility solution maker Hyundai Mobis has successfully developed a 5G communication module for automotive use, the firm said in a statement.
The new 5G communication module for automotive use is designed to provide ultra-high-speed connections, ultra-low latency and “hyperconnectivity,” Hyundai Mobis said. It combines a communication chip, memory, an RF circuit and GPS, and the company intends to use the technology in telematics services for 5G-connected vehicles.
Some examples of telematics services are remote vehicle control, over-the-air updates, real-time traffic data sharing, and emergency calling.
Hyundai Mobis said it aims to reach the global market with an integrated solution based on V2X communications and its newly developed 5G tech. The solution, it says. features a “broad range of transport applications” for enhanced safety and convenience for drivers including sensor-data sharing between vehicles, automatic deceleration in school zones and vehicle control in emergencies.
However, the Korean company noted that these applications are still in the early stage of development.
“We will strive to develop differentiated mobility technology that merges the integrated 5G V2X technology with the existing autonomous vehicle sensors and our IVI technology, which gives us a competitive advantage over rivals,” said Joon-bae Choi, head of the connectivity & sound sector at Hyundai Mobis.
According to Hyundai Mobis, approximately 52 million vehicles are expected to use 5G telematics modules by 2028, compared to some 2 million cars as of 2021.
Hyundai Mobis’s parent company is South Korean car marker Hyundai Motor Group.
Last month, Hyundai Motor Group said it will expand its strategic partnership with compatriot telecom operator KT (KT) to further collaborate in the future mobility market.
Hyundai Motor Group said that it will push for extensive cooperation in next-generation communication infrastructure and ICT, including joint research with KT on 6G autonomous driving technology and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) communication network based on satellite communication.
In addition to joint advanced research on future technologies, the two parties will also diversify their business partnership areas in 5G communication network-based, customized connected car services and security communication module technology collaboration by exchanging existing core competency of respective party.
Hyundai Motor Group and KT agreed to focus on advancing vehicle technologies in the field of connectivity area, which is the basis for realizing MECA (Mobility Service, Electrification, Connectivity, Autonomous).
The two parties agreed to acquire mutual shares through treasury stock exchange in order to create synergy in future businesses, enhance the execution and sustainability of mutual cooperation, and strengthen long-term partnerships.
Under the share swap deals, KT will exchange its own 7.7% stake worth about KRW 750 billion (currently $525 million) with a 1.04% stake in Hyundai Motor Co. and a 1.46% stake in Hyundai Mobis Co..
