NEW YORK—AT&T Wireless Services and L.M. Ericsson said they completed the first live UMTS voice call in the United States as part of a testing process to help ensure AT&T Wireless delivers next-generation capabilities to its subscribers on schedule.
The call was made using Ericsson wireless networking equipment, including both radio access and core infrastructure, at AT&T Wireless’ headquarters in Redmond, Washington. The carrier has said it plans to begin rolling out UMTS services in the United States beginning in 2004.
