NEW DELHI, India—The regional mobile satellite operator Thuraya Satellite Communications Company has signed a license agreement in Pakistan to provide its dual-mode GSM/satellite telephony services.
Pak Telecom, Thuraya’s service provider in Pakistan, will offer Thuraya mobile satellite services, including handsets and subscriber identity module (SIM) cards. A road show was held recently to mark the launch of Thuraya’s commercial services.
India too has decided to consider a proposal from Thuraya to launch its services in the country. Minister of State for Telecommunications Tapan Sikdar, currently visiting Dubai and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), had a meeting with Thuraya Chairman Mohammed Omran to discuss the proposal. Sikdar said in Dubai that Thuraya would be allowed in only after it makes a commitment to establish a gateway in India on its own or through a joint venture.
