OmniSky licenses Handspring’s Blazer browser

SAN FRANCISCO-OmniSky Corp. announced it is the first to license Handspring Inc.’s Blazer browser and proxy server, which the companies said speeds up Web browsing on devices using Palm Inc.’s operating system.

According to the companies, Blazer technology allows Palm OS users to see the first screen of almost any Web site in less than five seconds. The technology allows users to immediately begin viewing content while the rest of the site is downloaded. Blazer supports HTML, WAP, WML, xHTML and image formats like GIF and JPEG, according to the companies.

“The integration of the Blazer browser with OmniSky’s own technology should provide users of Handspring Visor handhelds with the best available browsing experience,” said Ed Colligan, Handspring’s senior vice president for sales and marketing.
