Austria’s ONE launches GPRS

BUCHAREST, Romania-At the end of February, ONE began offering GPRS service throughout Austria. Billing is based on the data volume transferred. The handsets for the network are the GPRS-enabled Motorola Inc. Timeport 260 handsets.

“Our customers merely have to pay for the data volumes actually transferred and can use WAP as well as the Internet, depending on whether customers gain access via Internet or WAP, different costs are incurred. This is unique in Austria,” explained Jorgen Bang-Jensen, chief executive officer of ONE.

GPRS customers also will be able to use their mobile phones abroad in the future. ONE has concluded the first GPRS roaming contracts in Europe with German carrier Viag Interkom and Czech EuroTel.

Apart from GPRS, ONE is also currently the only operator in Austria offering High Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD) service, which is well suited to transfer large data volumes with guaranteed bandwidth.

Bang-Jensen added: “Our clear objective consists in designing GPRS applications in a customer-friendly way. In the early introduction phase until the end of March, we would like to observe how customers respond and undertake modifications if necessary.”
