BUDAPEST, Hungary-A Matav-led consortium has offered a winning bid of US$341.3 million to acquire 51 percent of Makedonski Telekommunikacii (Maktel), the sole fixed-line and mobile operator in Macedonia.
The consortium plans to invest US$241 million into Maktel during the next two years. This investment will bring voice services and online capabilities to Macedonia, in addition to mobile voice, data and Internet services, the company said.
Matav plans to take operational, management and voting control of Maktel once the purchase is completed. Matav, the principle provider of telecom services in Hungary, has an 87.4-percent stake in the consortium, followed by Southeast Europe Equity Fund (SEEF) with a 6.3-percent stake and Interamerican Holding with a 6.3-percent stake.
Maktel had about 49,000 subscribers as of 31 March, 2000.
