WASHINGTON-Five Caribbean countries, all part of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States are in the process of implementing telecom legislation challenging Cable & Wireless’ monopoly on telecom services in the region. Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts, St. Lucia and St. Vincent formed the Telecom Reform Authority Treaty, which if proven successful, may gain other Caribbean supporters.
In addition, the government of Barbados announced a timetable to open its telecom market, and cellular service is expected to be liberalized by next month.
