Telefonica to deploy ISC filter system

MT. PROSPECT, Ill.-Illinois Superconductor Corp. said Spanish wireless operator Telefonica Moviles will deploy the company’s HTS filter system.

Telefonica made the decision after conducting field trials of ISC’s SuperRx tower-mounted HTS system in two live GSM sites in Cordoba, Spain.

“To my knowledge, this is the first time an HTS system has been deployed for use in a GSM network,” said Dr. George Calhoun, chief executive officer of ISC. “We saw an improvement in uplink signal levels of more than 15 [decibels], and a reduction in mobile transmit power of 7 dB or more, with significant range extension.

“Some have voiced the opinion that because GSM is based on TDMA, it would show smaller benefits than CDMA from superconducting front-end technology. However, the results we see from these tests are equal to or even somewhat larger than the similar measurements in our CDMA tests,” Dr. Calhoun added.

Financial terms of the order were not released.
