Ericsson garners China Mobile order

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-Ericsson said it signed a contract to supply equipment for China’s first national Internet Protocol backbone. China Mobile signed the contract, which includes an IP backbone network for voice over IP access, and transmission for GPRS technology by year-end.

Eventually, the system will deliver, voice, data and multimedia for third-generation mobile communications, Ericsson said.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.

AsiaInfo Holdings also received a $16 million contract to build a national IP backbone for China Mobile, connecting the country’s 31 provincial capitals.

The unified-messaging features of the service will enable China Mobile to provide its customers with convergent value-added services, such as WAP access of e-mail messages and two-way conversion between text e-mail and voice messages.

China Unicom Ltd. selected Asian wireless Internet business services provider Asia.com Inc. to expand its WAP network and short message service reach in China.

In addition, Asia.com said its development team will build the application platforms enabling China Unicom’s network of 20 WAP portals to deliver coverage of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. Asia.com will also develop wireless platforms for China Unicom’s Short Message Service Center platform, expanding Olympic news coverage to an additional 14 million users.
