Nokia Corp. will integrate its General Packet Radio Service core network solution into Vodafone New Zealand’s network, providing mobile Internet access to Vodafone’s subscribers. Vodafone plans to launch commercial GPRS service during the fourth quarter.
Taiwan
Nokia will deliver its General Packet Radio Service core network to Taiwan’s state-owned mobile operator Chunghwa Telecom., offering packet-switched data via its GSM network. Chungwha said it will launch commercial applications by the beginning of next year.
Korea
Korea-based Deltacom Co. Ltd. was granted a royalty-bearing license under Qualcomm Inc.’s CDMA technology and patents to develop, make and sell subscriber products for CDMA and High Data Rate applications.
Canada
Unique Broadband Systems Inc. signed a multi-year supply contract with Bell Canada to provide broadband wireless equipment and training and maintenance services to provide wireless Internet access to institutional customers. The contract has a projected value of $3.9 million.
Mexico
Mexican wireless operator Pegaso PCS launched an Internet portal offering a variety of information services exclusively for Pegaso clients. The site, www.wau.com, also allows Pegaso users to customize their news requirements and receive information on their wireless phones. Emilio Braun Burillo, director of the site, said he expects the portal to have up to 80,000 users by the end of the year, and around 200,000 users by the end of 2001.
Singapore
Citibank launched a wireless service in Singapore, developed in conjunction with 742 Solutions Inc., that allows users to track bank account information from Web-enabled mobile phones. The service, Citibank Alerts, also sends updates on stock news and quotes. It is the first service as a result of the alliance between Citibank and 724 Solutions.
