ATLANTA-BellSouth Corp. reported a 9.8-percent increase in both second-quarter earnings and consolidated revenue compared with the same quarter last year and an increase in both domestic and international wireless revenue.
The company’s reported earnings per share increased from 51 cents per share in 1999 to 56 cents per share during the second quarter of 2000, boosted by quarterly consolidated revenues of $6.8 billion.
BellSouth’s domestic wireless revenue was up more than 17 percent to $877 million for the second quarter, compared with the $747 million the company reported last year. BellSouth also reported it served 5.9 million domestic mobile-phone customers at the end of the second quarter, with average revenue per subscriber increasing from $51 per subscriber during the second quarter of 1999 to $54 at the end of the second quarter this year.
Internationally, BellSouth reported it added 790,000 wireless customers for an annual growth rate of 70 percent, including the company’s recent acquisition that expanded its operations in Brazil. Second-quarter proportionate revenues climbed more than 17 percent to $834 million in 2000 from $709 million during the second quarter of 1999.
