Chile’s secretary of telecommunications (Subtel) has announced that it will disclose on Dec. 16 the new award conditions for the 4G auctions in the band of 2.6 GHz. Subtel will parcel out big three 20 MHz blocks of frequency for applicants, which may access a maximum of one block. The award will take place during the first half of 2012.
The 4G auction rules include items related to the quality requirements, infrastructure sharing for mobile virtual network operator input and display Internet service in 560 rural villages without connectivity.

In a statement, Subtel chief Jorge Atton said the auction will fulfill the government’s commitment to provide spectrum for the development of higher-quality mobile Internet services, as well as that the government set higher quality standards for services, measuring the actual coverage within homes and buildings, and encouraging infrastructure-sharing that favors the entry of mobile virtual network operators and network usage by third parties.
Chile currently has about 2 million mobile connections to the Internet, and country expects to see a growing demand for bandwidth and data traffic from users. According to Subtel, the number of fixed Internet connections will be overtaken by mobile Internet connections this year, and the upward trend in these types of connections is likely to increase, with the popularization of broadband implemented through mobile technology.
