InterDigital to open Tokyo office

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.-InterDigital Communications Corp. will become international early next year, opening an office in Tokyo. The company said the office in Tokyo will be responsible for business development focused on the Japanese market and will manage InterDigital’s presence in other Asian markets, including handling existing demand for third-generation technology.

“Japan will be the first market for third-generation products with trials beginning in the first half of 2001, and commercial systems rolling out one to two years later,” said Joseph Gifford, executive vice president of InterDigital. “Having local telecommunications professionals and a permanent local presence in this market will allow us to begin implementing our sales and technology transfer programs. It is imperative that we position ourselves as a key technology supplier for the Japanese market, the first battleground for 3G.”
