Shared Technologies sets holiday record

WETHERSFIELD, Conn.-Prepaid cellular phone service took a step forward this holiday season with Shared Technologies Cellular’s announcement that it achieved a one-day record for phone activations.

STC, a national cellular service provider of rental, prepaid and activation services, signed up approximately 7,000 new prepaid cellular phones the day after Christmas.

“We’ve seen a steady increase in sales from retailers since post-Thanksgiving retail promotions,” said Anthony D. Autorino, chairman and chief executive officer of STC. “The more advertising exposure these prepaid products receive via television, direct mail and retail sales circulars, the more consumer awareness is generated, which directly contributes to an increase in sales and activations.”

STC has been offering prepaid service since 1998, with more than 300,000 phones activated using STC’s CellEase prepaid cellular service. This service, a universal usage card using technology provided under contract by Telemac Corp., has provided dramatic growth for prepaid phone service. According to the Yankee Group, in the next few years the United States will begin to resemble Europe in terms of widespread acceptance of wireless prepaid services.
