Metawave
Metawave Communications Corp. appointed Scot B. Jarvis to its board of directors. Jarvis helped build McCaw Cellular Communications cellular business through aggressive acquisitions of cellular licenses. During his nine years with McCaw, Jarvis held many positions including vice president of McCaw Development Group, vice president and general manager of the California region and vice president of acquisitions and development. After leaving McCaw in 1994, Jarvis was vice president of operations at Eagle River Investments L.L.C., where he joined the board of directors at Nextel Communications Inc. and co-founded Nextlink. In addition to Metawave, Jarvis also serves on the board of directors for Nextlink Communications Inc., PulsePoint Communications Inc., Wireless Facilities and Xypoint Corp.
Triton PCS
Triton PCS Inc., an AT&T Wireless Services Inc. licensed affiliate, announced the appointment of its executive team. Steven R. Skinner was named president, chief operating officer and director of the company. Skinner previously served as vice president of operations and chief operating officer of Horizon Cellular Group.
Triton appointed Clyde Smith executive vice president and chief technical officer responsible for leading all aspects of Triton PCS’ engineering and technology deployment initiatives. Prior to joining Triton, Smith was vice president of technology and network planning with Alltel Communications Inc. in Little Rock, Ark., where he was responsible for the buildout of Alltel’s personal communications services markets.
David Clark was named senior vice president and chief financial officer. Previously, he was a managing director at Furman Selz L.L.C., where he specialized in communications finance.
Triton named David Standing senior vice president of marketing. Standing previously served as vice president of marketing with Comcast Cellular Communications Inc.
PCIA
The Personal Communications Industry Association appointed telecommunications attorney Mary McDermott senior vice president and chief of staff for government relations. McDermott will join PCIA by the end of May, following a four-year tenure as vice president for legal and regulatory affairs at the United States Telephone Association in Washington, D.C. McDermott has more than 16 years of experience in telecom law, said PCIA. “She will play a key role in leading the charge as our growing government relations team makes direct competition between wireless and wireline services a reality,” said PCIA President Jay Kitchen.
Lodestar Towers
Lodestar Towers Inc. Chief Executive Officer Ronald Gibbs was elected section chairman of the Personal Communications Industry Association’s Site Owners and Managers Association. As SOMA director, Gibbs will represent its members on public-policy issues that affect the operation, management or use of communications towers, sites and facilities. SOMA has been involved with advancing legislation and technical standards to ensure that siting does not cause barriers to deploying wireless services. Gibbs will serve as chairman of SOMA until April 2000.
BIA Telecom
BIA Telecom Inc. appointed A. Jerome Fowlkes director of telecommunications consulting. Fowlkes will be leading the BIA Telecom group that specializes in providing strategic consulting, financial analysis and market assessments for the telecommunications industries. Prior to assuming his new role at BIA, Fowlkes was deputy chief of the Auction and Industry Analysis Division of the Federal Communications Commission’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, where his responsibilities included oversight of the FCC’s multibillion dollar auction installment loan portfolio. Fowlkes also served as the Bureau’s senior representative on the FCC’s broadband personal communications service C-block installment loan task force. Fowlkes originally joined the FCC in 1994 as a senior financial analyst for the Cable Services Bureau. In June 1996, he became a member of the FCC Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, where he initially served as senior financial analyst before becoming deputy division chief in March 1997. Prior to joining the FCC, Fowlkes was a vice president and commercial lending officer at several financial institutions.
Philips
Philips Consumer Communications L.P. named Robert Faught president of its North American region. Faught will oversee PCC’s operations in the region, to meet the company’s goal of becoming one of the industry’s top three manufacturers and marketers of telephony products by 2000, said PCC. Previously, Faught was executive director of consumer sales and marketing at BellSouth Cellular Corp. Prior to that he held several senior management positions at LA Cellular, a joint venture of BellSouth and McCaw Communications Inc. (today AT&T Wireless Services). Mike McTighe, chief executive officer of PCC said Faught “has shown a particular adeptness at growing business rapidly and aggressively.”
Metricom
Timothy A. Dreisbach took the helm as president and chief executive officer of Metricom Inc., replacing Robert Dilworth, who remains chairman of the board. Prior to joining Metricom, Dreisbach was president and CEO of Premenos Technology Corp., which supplies software and services for business-to-business electronic commerce. Before that, he served five years as senior vice president for North American Sales and Service at Boole & Babbage, a $200 million provider of enterprise systems management software. Dreisbach also was a founding officer of Legent Corp. Dreisbach’s appointment concludes a search that was led by Vulcan Ventures Inc., Bellevue, Wash., which purchased about 49 percent of Metricom in January, making it the company’s largest investor, said Metricom.
