LITTLE ROCK, Ark.-Alltel Communications Inc. announced an agreement with Cellemetry
L.L.C., under which it now offers new services for remote monitoring or control of security systems, utility meters,
moving vehicles and machines over the control channels of existing wireless networks.
Cellemetry Data Service is
an information transport technology that enables two-way wireless data transmission. Cellemetry provides the service
through partnerships with wireless carriers.
“To date, wireless applications have operated primarily over voice
channels,” said Rick Wartko, staff manager for Alltel’s wireless data products.
“Alltel’s new service
transmits signals over the underutilized control channels, removing previous obstacles to cost-effective wireless
monitoring. Additionally, customers will be sending their data through a very robust and reliable
medium.”
Alltel said the Cellemetry application is available commercially to its wireless data customers. The
carrier has about 6.5 million wireless and wireline customers in 22 states and approximately 1,000 information services
clients in 48 countries.
