ORLANDO, Fla.-Samsung Telecommunications America and Tecore announced they will partner to offer Code Division Multiple Access equipment to small personal communications services markets.
“No one is targeting the D, E and F carriers” with CDMA equipment, said Jay Salkini, president and chief executive officer of Tecore, a switching provider.
Though many D-, E- and F-block operators have yet to announce their protocol decisions, most have been leaning toward choosing Time Division Multiple Access or Global System for Mobile communications technologies. John Kavulich, senior product manager of wireless systems with Samsung, said the cost structures associated with CDMA technology have been high because of the proprietary nature of existing equipment.
“We have found that the cost structure associated with the proprietary nature [of CDMA equipment] didn’t compete with GSM. Our unbundled architecture competes with GSM,” said Kavulich.
Samsung is integrating its Pico Base Transceiver Station, the PicoBTS, with Tecore’s AirCore Platform MSC and transmission system. The two will provide a multidimensional platform to support suburban and rural wireless networks in North America.
“Smaller markets do not have to mean smaller profits for carriers,” said Salkini. “Tecore and Samsung can provide carriers with one scalable and flexible solution capable of handling all call processing capabilities, including highly profitable roaming revenues.”
The partnership also will help Samsung, a strong CDMA manufacturer for the South Korean market, increase its presence in the U.S. market. The company entered the U.S. market last year announcing the Pico BTS. Samsung says it has confirmed orders for the product. The company plans to form additional strategic partnerships to bolster its presence.
