NOKIA DEMOS HIGH-SPEED DATA TECHNOLOGY VIA GSM NETWORK

HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Corp. said it conducted a demonstration of its High Speed Circuit Switched Data technology on a Global System for Mobile communications test network.

The test included applications such as video-on-demand, music-on-demand, information services, large e-mail downloads, network games, re-broadcasting of television programs, and live video camera surveillance.

Nokia said its HSCSD solution can boost data speeds from 9.6 kilobits per second to 14.4 kbs in a single traffic channel, and by multiplexing up to four channels into a single time slot, that figure could rise to 57.6 kbs. With the help of compression technology, data speeds can be increased even higher, the company said.

Nokia said the HSCSD solution is available in GSM networks without any base station hardware modifications. Only the Nokia BSS7 software upgrade is needed.
