SAN FRANCISCO-Canadian Satellite Communications Inc., AirTouch Satellite Services and Loral Space & Communications formed a joint venture to provide fixed and mobile wireless services throughout Canada using the Globalstar L.P. communications system. Canadian Satellite will own the majority interest in Globalstar Canada if approved by Industry Canada.
The companies said the Globalstar satellite system will consist of 48 low-earth-orbit satellites, which eventually will provide global voice telephony, call forwarding, conferencing, call waiting, data, messaging, fax service, paging and position locating. More than 100 countries are planning to use the Globalstar system.
