NDC TO PROVIDE GATEWAY FOR INTERNATIONAL ROAMING BETWEEN U.S. AND EUROPE

SAN DIEGO-The National Dispatch Center Inc. said it will provide international call routing for GlobalRoam, the international cellular roaming service scheduled to be introduced by GTE Mobilnet Inc. in the third quarter of this year.

GlobalRoam will allow traveling Europeans and North Americans to roam on each other’s continents with mobile service. GTE will sell the service wholesale to cellular carriers in North America; Deutsche Telekom Mobilfunk GmbH, also a partner in the venture, will offer the service to carriers of Global System for Mobile communications in Europe.

All international calls from North American networks will be routed through NDC, according to the San Diego-based company. Charges will appear on the subscriber’s home cellular bill. The subscriber will receive an integrated voice response menu and automated voice prompts in 17 languages, depending on the 800 number dialed.

To use the service, customers will enter a security code and the number being called. NDC will then switch the call to its destination and collect billing information for GTE Mobilnet.

European travelers must purchase or rent an American Mobile Phone Service phone with which to roam; North Americans are required to purchase or rent a GSM phone when overseas, NDC said. The company is a gateway provider of wireless messaging services in the United States, including bilingual operator dispatch services and wireless information services.
