Vonage’s $80 Wi-Fi phone hits retail arena

HOLMDEL, N.J.-Voice over Internet Protocol company Vonage Holdings Corp. released a Wi-Fi telephone it will sell for around $80 with a service plan. The UTStarcom Inc.-sourced phone will allow Vonage users to place VoIP calls from any publicly available hotspot.

“With the rapid increase of open access points around the world, this is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to take advantage of the affordability of VoIP service and also enjoy the convenience of mobility,” said Louis Holder, executive vice president of product development for Vonage. “The UTStarcom Wi-Fi handset bundled with Vonage’s service represents the leading-edge of VoIP service worldwide.”

Vonage announced earlier this year its intention to sell UTStarcom’s F1000 phone. Several other VoIP service providers already sell the device.
