BOONTON, N.J.-The global wireless operations support systems market is expected to grow to more than $13 billion this year, according a study by Insight Research.
OSS is the I.T. infrastructure that performs customer care, provisioning and management functions in wireless networks.
The report said wireless operators are investing in OSS systems to keep up with service demands. Indeed, their networks are expected to account for more than half of all telecom service revenues by 2010. In addition to the $13 billion spent on worldwide OSS systems this year, $1 billion is expected to be spent on professional services for OSS installations, said the report.
“Wireline operators are counting on new revenue streams from multimedia and content provider partnerships,” said Robert Rosenberg, president of Insight. “Wireless service providers will do the same, plus they can leverage an extraordinary amount of information about their customers-calling patterns, location information, data application usage and mobile commerce-which, when amassed, provides an incredibly detailed picture of every individual in their subscriber population.
“The ability to capture, organize, mine, and utilize this unprecedented wealth of wireless customer information depends on advancements in OSSes.”
