Finland allocates 2010-2025 band for UMTS

SAN JOSE, Calif.-The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communication allocated the 2010-2025 MHz band for UMTS TDD wireless broadband networks, according to the Global UMTS TDD Alliance.

The ministry awarded a nationwide license in the band to SkyWeb, which expects to deploy a UMTS TDD system to offer mobile broadband services to business and consumers. The company said it will offer an integrated UMTS TDD/Wi-Fi PCMCIA data card and also plans to offer wireless handsets for wireless voice over Internet Protocol services.

In Japan, IPMobile plans to launch UMTS TDD services in the 2010 MHz spectrum band in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka by October 2006.

Developed by the 3GPP, UMTS TDD is the TDD branch of the 3G UMTS international telecommunications standard.
