Hip-hop artists top Sprint Nextel’s music downloads

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and The Game have accounted for more than 2.5 million music downloads through Sprint Nextel Corp.’s Music Tones service, the carrier announced Wednesday.

50 Cent set a record by reaching Platinum/Gold status, selling 1 million real tones from one album and 500,000 from another. Snoop Dogg and The Game each attained Gold status.

Meanwhile, Sony BMG artists Ciara and Mario have sold a combined 1.5 million mobile music clips through the service, with Ciara selling more than 1 million real tones from her album “Goodies.” Finally, Mike Jones quickly established himself as one of Music Tones’ most popular new hip-hop artists, selling more than half a million clips from “Who is Mike Jones,” which was released in April.

“Mike Jones achieving Gold status so quickly on Sprint is impressive,” said Jeff Hallock, Sprint’s vice president of consumer product marketing and strategy. “He joins an elite group of artists who have achieved this milestone.”
