Distributed antenna systems are set to go underground in New York as DAS provider Solid said it was tapped by Transit Wireless to support the extension of wireless coverage throughout the New York City subway system. The project is reported to include 277 stations, with 30 expected to go live by the end of the year.
Financial details of the multi-year agreement were not released. Transit Wireless, which is majority owned by Broadcast Australia, owns and operates the subway station wireless communications network and acts as a neutral host for extending wireless coverage throughout the lines. The organization was formed to handle wireless coverage requirements put in place by New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority.
Solid said the deployment will include its Alliance “neutral-host” DAS platform designed to support multiple carriers on a single piece of equipment.
DAS networks were recently used to support wireless services at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C., respectively. A recent report from Mobile Experts predicted the DAS market will ship 2.5 million DAS nodes in 2017, or nearly doubling its current rate of sales.
