Tellabs Inc. has agreed to acquire Steinbrecher Corp. for about $76 million. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval and approval by Steinbrecher’s stockholders.
Founded in 1973, Burlington, Mass.-based Steinbrecher supplies wideband base station products for digital cellular and wireless data applications. The company reported about $10 million in sales for the year ended Dec. 31.
Tellabs said Steinbrecher is currently completing development of a family of cellular base station products called MiniCell, targeted at indoor wireless and wireless local loop in both developed and newly industrialized nations worldwide.
“This acquisition will significantly expand our ability to provide “last mile” access solutions in wireline, coax or wireless applications around the world,” said Tellabs International President Peter Guglielmi.
The company believes the MiniCell products will allow radio base stations to easily adapt to the different frequency bands and modulation formats used in public and private wireless services.
“Our technology, combined with Tellabs’ global reach and array of transmission products, will create a potent industry force,” said Douglas Shute, president and chief executive officer of Steinbrecher. Steinbrecher currently employs more that 130 people at its Burlington headquarters, which will become the home of Tellabs’ Wireless Systems Division.
