PNI TO PURCHASE BIG APPLE PAGING

Preferred Networks Inc. announced it has signed a definitive agreement to purchase substantially all the assets of Big Apple Paging Corp. for $2.6 million.

About $1.9 million of the purchase price will be paid in PNI common stock with the remainder to be paid in cash, said PNI. PNI will acquire assets that include Big Apple’s common carrier 152.60 MHz paging licenses and associated network equipment in the New Jersey, New York and southern Connecticut markets.

Big Apple serves about 26,000 paging subscribers through reseller relationships, said PNI. Completion of the acquisition will increase PNI’s active numbers in service to more than 200,000.

USAir to equip jets with GTE Airfones

USAir said it will equip its jet aircraft with airborne telephones supplied by GTE Airfone under an agreement between the two companies.

The Advanced Digital Airfone Service will give USAir’s passengers advanced inflight communications tools, enabling them to make and receive calls, send and receive data and faxes, access their e-mail and voice mail and conduct conference calls, said USAir.

Installation of the equipment will begin in August and about half of the fleet will be equipped by year’s end. USAir expects to complete the work in the first half of 1997.
