LUCENT GETS $7M EQUIPMENT OR DER FROM CZECH FIRM

PRAGUE-Landline operator SPT Telecom s.p. of the Czech Republic has agreed to purchase wireless equipment, valued at $7 million, from Lucent Technologies Inc.

Lucent will supply 12 Integrated Radio Telecommunications systems to SPT, the Czech Republic’s wireline operator. The radio network will allow SPT to expand under its Rural II plan and provide service to outlaying areas.

With the new IRTs, SPT will be able to link 2,700 rural subscribers north of Prague into its public switched network via a radio-based communications system, instead of extending phone cables.

The equipment will be built in France at a factory Lucent recently acquired from Philips Electronics. Telecommunications Radioelectriques et Telephoniques (TRT) formerly manufactured and sold the IRT systems.

TRT provided the infrastructure equipment for SPT’s Rural I network, which linked 2,500 new subscribers to the existing network, under a March 1995 contract valued at $7 million.
