U.S. Wireless

The board of directors of U.S. Wireless Corp. announced the appointment of Dale Stone as president, chief operating officer and member of the board of directors. Stone is the former president of Qualcomm Inc.’s infrastructure division.

Tellabs

Richard Notebaert, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Ameritech Corp., has been nominated to join Tellabs’ board of directors. Notebaert would replace Dr. John Foulkes, who is stepping down from the board after 12 years. Tellabs stockholders will vote on Notebaert’s nomination at the company’s annual meeting in April.

Preferred Voice

Preferred Voice Inc. named Scott Ogilvie, currently managing director-western division at Classic Residence by Hyatt, to the company’s board of directors.

Tropian

Michael Kinser was appointed vice president of sales and marketing of Tropian Inc., a Silicon Valley-based advanced wireless communications technology company. Kinser will be responsible for the company’s worldwide sales and marketing activities. Prior to joining Tropian, Kinser served as senior vice president of marketing for Telular Corp. where he was responsible for global marketing, product management, licensing and original equipment manufacturer business development.

Protostar Wireless

Protostar Wireless Solutions L.L.C., a Georgia limited liability company, announced the addition of Rick Sopha as the company’s chief operating officer. Sopha previously worked at CCS, SOS Tele-Data, 3M, MediaOne and Michigan Bell.

CrediPort Systems

Tom Huegel has joined CrediPort Systems Inc., a manufacturer of wireless mobile credit card verification systems, as director of sales and marketing. Huegel will be responsible for the company’s national, regional and local distribution. Huegel was recently director of retail sales in New York and general manager for Cellular One.

AirGate PCS

AirGate PCS Inc., a Sprint PCS network partner, announced that Charles Goldfarb was appointed vice president of sales for the company’s coastal region. Goldfarb will cover the company’s licensed territory in the cities of Savannah, Ga.; Charleston and Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Wilmington and The Outer Banks, N.C. Prior to joining AirGate, Goldfarb was district vice president and general manager for Paging Network of North Carolina/South Carolina/Virginia Inc., with full sales and management responsibility for a subsidiary of the wireless messaging company.

VeloCom

Christiano Amon was named vice president of technology for VeloCom Inc., an international broadband telecommunications company. VeloCom also announced that Billi McCullough has joined the company as general counsel. Prior to joining the company, Amon was senior director of operations for Ericsson Wireless Communications Inc., overseeing the company’s Code Division Multiple Access Systems operations in Latin America, in addition to developing the regional technology for Ericsson’s business unit product portfolio. McCullough joins VeloCom from the Denver law firm of Holland & Hart L.L.P., where her practice focused on domestic and international transactions involving mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures primarily in Latin America.

ENREV

Clay Zimmerman was appointed vice president of marketing at enrev Corp., a provider of software to enhance the performance of rechargeable batteries. Zimmerman was previously vice president of marketing for Philips Consumer Communications where he was responsible for marketing communications, dealer programs and promotions, trade marketing, merchandising and product marketing throughout North America.

Personal Communications Industry Association

Mary McDermott, senior vice president and chief of staff for government relations for the Personal Communications Industry Association, is leaving to become senior vice president and general counsel for PathNet. Additionally, Dave Murray, PCIA director of legislative affairs, left earlier this year for a position at WinStar Communications Inc.

Wireless Communications Association

Wireless Communications Association announced the election of new board members. The board is comprised of Joseph Sandri Jr., vice president and regulatory counsel for Winstar Communications Inc.; Rick Guipe, senior vice president of Wireless Network Systems at TESSCO Technologies Inc.; Michael Greenbaum, president and chief executive officer of Hybrid Networks Inc.; Robert Gillan, vice president for wireless networks at Newbridge Networks Inc.; and Richard Mitchell, vice president and general manager of THOMCAST Communications Inc.’s Comwave Division.

Federal Communications Commission

The Federal Communications Commission has announced that Jack Zinman has advanced to legal counsel to Lawrence Strickling, chief of the FCC’s Common Carrier Bureau.

National Telecommunications and Information Administration

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, a unit of the Department of Commerce, has made several staff changes following the arrival of Gregory L. Rohde as assistant secretary. Chanda Tuck-Garfield will be assistant director of the minority telecommunications development program, Derrick Owens will be director of NTIA interagency affairs, and Judd Crapa will be special assistant for administrative affairs. Rohde has also named three associate administrators: Becky Burr for international affairs, William T. Hatch for spectrum management and Kelly Levy for policy.

Bell Atlantic/GTE

As Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp. progress toward the close of their merger in the near future, changes were made last month to the legal staff. These changes will become effective with the merger. The following will be based in New York: Bruce Brafman of GTE will become vice president and deputy general counsel responsible for department administration; Marianne Drost of GTE will become deputy general counsel and corporate secretary; Randy Milch of Bell Atlantic will become vice president and deputy general counsel responsible for the domestic telecom business; and Steve Zipperstein of GTE will become vice president and general counsel. Based in Washington, D.C., will be: Mike Glover of Bell Atlantic will become vice president and deputy general counsel responsible for federal regulatory affairs; Mark Mathis of Bell Atlantic will become vice president and deputy general counsel responsible for state regulatory matters; John Thorne of Bell Atlantic will become vice president and deputy general counsel responsible for antitrust, trade regulation and competition; and Ed Whelan of GTE will continue as vice president and counselor to the general counsel.

National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee

The White House announced earlier this month that President Clinton intends to nominate Ronald D. Sugar as a member of the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee.

Sugar is president and chief operating officer of TRW Aerospace and Information Systems as well as a member of TRW’s Chief Executive Office and Management Committee.

AMT

Randy Jenkins has been appointed vice president of corporate sales for AMT. Jenkins previously was director of new business development. AMT also announced that Scott Rumery was appointed director of engineering.

Convergys

James Boyce was appointed president of Convergys Corp.’s Internet Solutions Business Unit. Boyce will be responsible for the continuing expansion of the company’s Internet Protocol-related business opportunities. Prior to joining Convergys, Boyce was vice president of global customer business development-eBusiness for P&G Internet.

Geoworks

Geoworks Corp. announced it has replaced Chairman Gordon Mayer with David Neylon, following Mayer’s resignation. Neylon was formerly chief operating officer of LookSmart Ltd., a
n Internet search and directory company. He joined the Geoworks board as a director earlier this year. Meyer served as chairman since July 1998. He also w
as the company’s former president and chief executive officer for seven years.

Anadigics

John van Saders was promoted to vice president of advanced development at Anadigics, a designer and manufacturer of radio frequency integrated circuit solutions for broadband and wireless communications markets.

The company noted that van Saders will expand Anadigics’ product offerings for the wireless and broadband communications markets by discovering new market areas through market research, product definition, technology acquisition, and research and development. Prior to his new position, van Saders served as director at Anadigics.

Worldwide Wireless Networks

Daniel Cook was appointed chief technical officer of Worldwide Wireless Networks Inc., an integrated wireless communications company. Cook will be responsible for the technical affairs of the company and will report to the chief executive officer and board of directors.

Center for Study of Wireless Electromagnetic Compatibility

Jo-Anne Basile, vice president for external and industry relations for the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, has been elected to the Industry Advisory Board of the Center for Study of Wireless Electromagnetic Compatibility at the University of Oklahoma. At CTIA, Basile is responsible for directing industry initiatives among wireless carriers and manufacturers to address issues related to health effects and safe product usage.

Basile is also CTIA’s spokeswoman for policy makers and represents the association with international organizations on all health and product usage matters. She also currently serves as chairperson of the International Mobile Phone Association Network.
