BOSTON-Ovum warned that Wireless Application Protocol supporters don’t have much time to take advantage of the now-open window of opportunity, which the global research and consulting company said will close quickly.
In a new report, “WAP Market Strategies,” the company said upcoming technologies like Extensible Markup Language and others may squeeze WAP out of the market, given the difficulties in marrying the Internet world with the wireless world.
“WAP was never meant as the `be-all and end-all’ of mobile Internet,” said Michele Mackenzie, Ovum analyst and lead author of the report.
“It will give way gracefully to more sophisticated technologies as and when mobile network improvements allow,” said Mackenzie. “But before that happens, players will have to work extra hard to get user buy-in and overcome any backlash.”
