TEMPE, Ariz.-Worldwide cellular subscribers are expected to exceed 1.2 billion by 2004, according to a market study conducted by Forward Concepts titled “Wireless2000.”
The report predicts the cellular subscriber base will pass the 1 billion mark in 2003, with 11 million of those subscribers having third-generation cellular service, said the report. The number of 3G subscribers is expected to double to 21.6 million the year after.
Global System for Mobile communications technology will continue to dominate the market into the next decade, according to the report, which forecasts 254 million GSM subscribers in 2004. CdmaOne is expected to have 198 million subscribers in 2004, and TDMA is expected to have 48 million subscribers.
The report also includes discussions and projections for wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, paging, wireless local area networks, broadband wireless, wireless Internet and global positioning system.
