NEW DELHI, India—Spice Nepal, a joint venture between India’s ModiCorp and Nepali trading house Khetans, is expected to launch its GSM services in the Himalayan kingdom by August. This will be the first private mobile-phone service in Nepal.
The launch was earlier delayed due to opposition from employees of the state-run Nepal Telecommunications Corporation, which operates its own GSM services. The legal writ filed by the employees was rejected by the Supreme Court last year.
The services will initially be launched in Kathmandu and later extended to other areas. Company officials said an attractive tariff package is being worked out.
Nepal recently allowed Thuraya Satellite Communications to operate its dual-mode satellite-GSM service.
