BEIJING-PalmSource Inc., the operating system subsidiary of Palm Inc., announced it is expanding into the Chinese market for personal digital assistants and smart phones through a new Hong Kong office and several new licensing deals.
Palm said it will work with several Chinese companies to create Palm OS development communities, and handheld makers Legend Group Ltd. and Group Sense International Ltd. licensed the company’s operating system.
“We are excited to partner with Legend and GSL to bring leading-edge Palm-Powered products to market,” said David Nagel, chief executive officer and president of PalmSource. “These world-class partners, combined with an innovative and talented developer community will catalyze a thriving Palm Economy in China.”
Details of the deals, including any forthcoming products, were not disclosed.
Separately, Legend also announced a deal with Motion Computing to make a Tablet PC based on Motion’s design. The device will use Microsoft Corp.’s operating system and will run over wireless Wi-Fi networks.
