BellSouth, KTF further carrier BREW support

SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. continued to trumpet is BREW application download service, announcing BellSouth International will offer BREW services in nine areas in Latin America and that South Korean carrier KTF renewed its support for the platform.

BellSouth will offer BREW services to a total of 8.6 million subscribers under its Latin American affiliates, initially including those operating in Colombia and Ecuador and later in Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Separately, KTF said it renewed its contract with Qualcomm for its BREW service, called Magic ‘N Multipack. Since KTF launched BREW in November 2001, the carrier has signed more than 3.9 million subscribers and sold more than 19.4 million BREW applications.

Qualcomm also pointed out that its BREW platform can support the Korean Java-based Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability initiative, which KTF, SK Telecom and LG Telecom launched this year. The platform is based on Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java application download technology. Qualcomm said Java applications can run over its BREW service, and it is working with Sun Microsystems and Java company Esmertec to ensure such interoperability.
