HELSINKI, Finland-Several European groups said they have demonstrated the first vertical handover in commercial networks providing seamless switching among different network connections while an application was running. L.M. Ericsson, TeliaSonera Finland, Wi-Fi supplier Radionet and Helsinki University of Technology demonstrated the wireless local area network, local area network and GPRS network handover.
The demonstration is part of the Vertical HandOver research project to study the interoperability among different types of networks in which the four groups are involved.
“We believe that in the future, users will be able to choose from different network technologies,” said Radionet Chief Technology Officer Max Bjorkgren. “Seamlessly handing connection over from one network to the other will be one of the key challenges.”
