BERKELEY, Calif.-Sprint PCS yet again is offering a streaming TV service, this time through MobiTV and technology partner Idetic Inc.
In February, Sprint announced its 1KTV Java application, which the carrier said delivers streaming TV content. In August, the carrier announced a new deal with streaming company RealNetworks Inc. for a similar Java application. The RealNetworks application features streaming audio and a slide-show presentation.
Now MobiTV said it will offer both streaming audio and video through a downloadable Java application. The company said it will offer streams from TV channels including MSNBC, CNBC, Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, CSTV: College Sports Television, California Music Channel, Independent Music Network and others. The MobiTV Java application will be available for download for $10 per month.
“MobiTV really is live TV content streamed real-time to select PCS Vision phones, not pre-canned clips or slide shows. The real breakthrough here is that for the first time, people can watch real-time television content on their mobile phone anywhere on the Sprint Nationwide Network,” said Phillip Alvelda, Idetic’s chief executive officer. “We’re just feeding a global appetite for news and information on the go that’s fueled by more than 1.2 billion mobile phone users worldwide.”
