Residential and business subscribers both key to WiMAX

OSTERY BAY, N.Y.-A new study finds the business market for fixed broadband wireless access will be much bigger than previously thought, with 16 percent of the market in 2008 covered by small- and medium-sized enterprises.

“ABI acknowledges that the residential subscriber is the key target market for WiMAX-based services,” said Edward Rerisi, director of research for Allied Business Intelligence. “However, operators have learned from prior mistakes and must target both consumers and businesses to create sustainable business models.”

According to ABI’s new study, 42 percent of WiMAX users will be residential customers, but that a significant portion will be business users. Further, the firm said business users typically churn less than residential users, therefore the small/medium business customer will be a very attractive target market.
