Wireless marketing group forms anti-spam committee

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-The Mobile Marketing Association said it formed an anti-spam committee Wednesday, marking the organization’s work to keep wireless content and applications spam-free.

The committee is charged with researching the merits of a national preference and privacy database. It hopes to create a system that will allow consumers to opt in or out of various types of advertising campaigns.

Committee co-chairs include Bill Erickson, chief executive officer of M7 Networks; Gerry Chistensen, director of wireless services for VeriSign; and Neil Kuruppu, chief executive officer of Ecessor Corp.

“The mobile channel is the fastest-growing medium for brand marketers and content providers today,” said Jim Manis, MMA’s global chair. “The industry needs this committee to help ensure the consumer’s right of non-participation, as well as to continue to build the foundation for the industry’s long-term success.”
