CANNES, France-Following through on its fourth-quarter promises, Openwave Systems Inc. announced a deal with Qualcomm Inc. to include Openwave’s WAP browser on Qualcomm’s MSM chips.
“We are pleased to work with Openwave to provide an integrated client solution that addresses the rapid adoption of new 3G services and takes full advantage of the Launchpad features of our chipsets,” said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of marketing and product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “This phone solution streamlines development efforts and accelerates time to market to significantly reduce the costs of 3G device development.”
Openwave had previously promised a deal with a chipmaker, a move that marks an expansion of the company’s addressable customer base beyond just handset manufacturers.
In other Openwave news, the company announced China Unicom purchased an additional 6.4 million Openwave Mobile Access Gateway licenses and upgraded its entire subscriber base to MAG version 6. Separately, Openwave released its new Mobile Device Manager, which the company said includes technologies for accessing, adding and managing data services on wireless devices. Such over-the-air updating technology has become a major area of interest in the wireless handset market.
For its part, Openwave rival 724 Solutions announced Ericsson will include its X-treme Alerts Platform in L.M. Ericsson’s managed services offering of hosted content and application solutions for mobile operators. 724 also announced its Multimedia Application Gateway will support Nokia Corp.’s newly announced Xpress Audio Messaging service, and Swisscom Mobile will deploy 724’s X-treme Service Activity Manager.
