CANNES, France-Nortel Networks Ltd. and Lucent Technologies Inc. have intensified the momentum for Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystems.
Lucent said it has integrated six Bell Labs-developed software technologies into its IMS solution. Nortel said it is partnering with a group of technology players anchored by IBM Corp. to offer multimedia services to wireless and wireline subscribers.
Lucent said its new system will facilitate the delivery of the blend of voice, video and data services.
“It also helps reduce the introduction costs and time to market for new services by leveraging a common applications infrastructure to deliver services with a common ‘look and feel’ on third-generation mobile, Wi-Fi and wireline networks,” Lucent added.
Nortel called its platform Converged Multimedia Services, which it expects to streamline the process of developing, integrating, testing and launching of new services.
It will allow end users to initiate multiple services from within a communication session and allow service providers to reduce cost and create differentiated services, according to Nortel.
“Carriers are looking for a vendor that is able to integrate enablers, gateways, applications as well as end clients in a multimedia service offering,” said Bettina Tratz-Ryan, principal analyst with Gartner Inc.
