Samsung, Siemens make phone news at CeBIT

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Siemens AG showed off their new wares in conjunction with the CeBIT trade show in Germany. Such announcements are especially important for Siemens, which has weathered questions over the future of its mobile-phone business.

Indeed, Siemens came out of the gate swinging, releasing a series of new phones aimed at various sections of the market. The company released its first W-CDMA device, the SXG75, which features global positioning system, a 2-megapixel camera and an MP3 player. Siemens also released for the mid-range several new sleek clamshell and candybar-style devices, including the CL75 designed for “feminine elegance.” Although Siemens did not specify where it would sell the devices, they most likely will be released for the European market.

Siemens also announced an expansion of its machine-to-machine efforts.

Separately, Samsung showed off its SCH-V770 phone, which features a built-in 7-megapixel camera. According to reports, the phone also sports an MP3 player and business card scanner. Samsung has largely positioned itself at the forefront of the camera-phone race; indeed, most standard digital cameras feature resolutions of 4 to 5 megapixels.

In other phone news, Voice over IP provider BroadVoice announced it will sell UTStarcom Inc.’s new F1000 Wi-Fi handset.
