Qualcomm licenses Effnet technology for future 3G chips

SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. announced it licensed IP Header Compression from Stockholm, Sweden-based Effnet AB. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Qualcomm plans to use the technology in its future CDMA EV-DO and W-CDMA chipsets. Effnet said the technology would pave the way for Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem services over such networks.

“We are pleased to enter into this collaboration with Qualcomm and are confident that Effnet’s solution will become a de-facto standard for the industry,” said Effnet’s Hans Runesten. “By choosing Effnet’s IP Header Compression, manufacturers of wireless infrastructure equipment and network operators will also be able to reduce test and validation cycles of handsets powered by Qualcomm’s Mobile Station Modem solutions, allowing operators to quickly and effectively tap into the revenue streams of IP-based services such as VoIP and video telephony.”
