Weekly infrastructure awards wrap-up

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

 

Cellular

  • Canada: Nortel Networks said it is supplying equipment to Aliant for the carrier’s EV-DO network in Halifax. The carrier, which said it has invested $20 million in its EV-DO network, plans additional market launches with the technology this year.

     

Wi-Fi

  • Philippines: SMART Communications commercially launched Wi-Fi digital subscriber line service using Motorola Inc.’s MOTOwi4 Canopy fixed wireless solution.

     

  • United Kingdom: The West Midlands Networking Company selected QiComm Ltd. to provide Wi-Fi/WiMAX-based broadband services in rural areas of the West Midlands area of England.

     

  • United States: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign selected Meru Networks to provide a wireless local area network system for wireless connectivity throughout the campus.

     

WiMAX

  • Ireland: Alvarion Ltd. said it won an expansion deal from Irish Broadband, valued at $4 million, to expand the carrier’s network coverage in Dublin and eight other major cities in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

     

  • Singapore: Navini Networks has been chosen by Qmax Communications to provide equipment for a commercial pre-mobile WiMAX network in the Bukit Timah area.

Miscellaneous

 

  • Bangladesh: Accatel Inc. has selected Strix Systems to deploy a citywide wireless mesh network in Chittagong.

     

  • Spain: Codium Networks launched a broadband wireless network in southeastern Spain using equipment provided by Navini Networks.

     

  • United States: Chester County, Pa., awarded Motorola Inc. a contract valued at $5 million to install ruggedized mobile laptops for its police and fire departments.
